1993 190 E - Contaminated coolant - yellow sludge
Hello group and merc gurus
I have owned a mercedes 190E limited edition 1993 since new and have covered 96K without any probs apart from regular things like brakes and exhausts etc etc.
I have recently noticed a creamy sludge, yellowish in colour in the radiator expansion tank. i have drasined it but it keeps on re-appearing. I would like to know what it could possible be down to. There is n loss in performance and the engine does not overheat, there is no excessive oil consumption or any othyer symptoms that could possibly indicate the surce of the problem.
I have been told that it could be the head gasket or a crack in the head! if it is something like that, what would be the cost of a replacement (recon) or repair? Does anybody know a good merc mechanic in the North London (southgate) area? Who can recondition or suply a recon head?
Any information is appreciated.

head gasket.
oily moisture enters the cooling system. it can't be a crack if you can't see air bubbles on the expansion tank while running the engine at 2000rpm.

I have had that in my MB for a long time now. My sludge is only in the top part. I read somewhere that it comes from adding differing anti freeze. Most people don't buy the anti freeze from MB and that's the only reason I can find. Check your engine oil for white sludge too and if you don't see it there then I would not worry.
