Re: 1992/3 500SEL (quad cam)
Hi there,
mechanic has walked off the job & left me (the owner) to finish off, ha ha! Head gasket went & then hydraulic'd, bent valves on passenger side exhaust cam-shaft. Heads have been re-skimmed, new valves fitted, new head gaskets & heads replaced & torqued to correct settings. I have the 4 cam shafts locked into the correct positions but not sure where all the bits go that bolt onto the end of the 4 cam shafts. I know the 2 outer cams drive the distributors & the 2 inner cams seem to have variable valve timing. Not quite sure how & where all the bits go. I'm also lead to believe that the crank shaft should be at 45 degrees BTDC. The cam chain tensioner slipper also had to be replaced, which involved taking off the front cover & front crankshaft pulley. Anyone who has ever done this will have found out that you have to remove the little oil sump off the bottom of the engine to take off a small secondary chain that drives the oil pump from the crankshaft before you can remove this cover. I have been to Mercedes & asked the chief mechanic if any of his staff did 'guvvy' jobs... unfortunately not... but then he goes & asks me "what drives the oil pump on that engine??". Er... I'm sure it should be me asking them the questions, not the other way round!?!?! Any information & particularly pictures on engine components & re-assembly would be a great help!!!!

As I said my first post I really need info & pictures of how to re-build the ends of the 4 cam shafts (where the distributors go) so the timing chains are flopping free as there's no cogs on the end of the cams. Any pictures apertaining to the front end timing etc would be a huge help as I have a box of bits & don't know where they all go (jigsaw puzzle or what!?!). There's no front crankshaft pulley on, no radiator, all auxilliaries are detached, pipework etc is a maze, so any diagrams would be of great assistance.
