I bought an '84 300D about a year ago.

In the past few months I've parked the car to go in to a store to come out to find that it won't start. Doesn't click, doesn't do anything.

The battery is fine (brand new), all other power works in the car (windows, radio, lights, etc).

The last time i waited a day, went back and it started right up.

Any ideas?

I was hoping someone would say that. I don't know about the heat sheild. I'm a novice at this, but I'm going to get it on a jack this weekend and probably replace the starter and the solenoid (it's cheaper to buy the two together than it is just the solenoid).
