Question 1983 300SD Qs

I hope I have the right area for this. A buddy of mine has an old 300SD with the 4 speed auto trans. It has always slipped in 3rd he said, and now it will not move forward at all. Moves in reverse just fine. Is this just a matter of some adjustment that needs to be made? Or are the seals doen after about 180k mi(assumed no rebuild, but don't know for sure). I would also be very appreciative of getting a copy of the service manual for that car(I want dealer book, not Haynes crap).

Do those books contain trans service info? I can't tell from the descriptions, and I'm having a hard time finding the contact us part of their page...

Yes, you could also contact the Mercedes Classic Center and buy the manuals on DVD. It's very handy.

I contacted the folks at mercedesmanuals.com and asked if their book had trans info in it, and they said no. Does anyone heave experience with their book on the W126 series for the 300SD? I need to know what the book has in before I buy it.

ForcedInduction, I got to looking at that file(thanks again), and it appears to contain info for everything but, the 1983 300SD. Or did MB use this trans in many vehicles with minor changes(more/less clutches depending on motor)? If so how much did it change from 1983 to 1993(the year the manual appears to have been printed). I saw stuff in there about a vacuum control mechanism, but that doesn't seem right for a diesel. Though most of my auto mech exp is with N/A gas engines, and turbo gas engines...

So the 722.303 trans(numbers stamped into the side of the case just above the pan on the right side of trans case) is covered in this book? I have 6 pan bolts, but don't see anything in the book that tells me how to identify my trans. I believe the sales designation for it was W4A 040.
