1967 230SL starter switch

1967 230SL starter switch
When the car is being driven, a bumpy road turns off the motor. Discovered that the key in the starter switch loses contact. In Position 2 as you apply slight pressure up or down on the ignition keyit causes electrical contact to be disrupted.
Does this mean that the whole unit needs to be replaced (including the steering lock) or what?
How do you best get at what needs to be done? Assuming you need to remove the speedo, tach and/or center gauge cluster, my service manual unfortunately does not have a section for how to do this on a 230SL. Any help on how to remove these gauges.
Appreciate any help,
Tom
