am not sure, but could it be a poor ground?

find the ground wire and attach it diretly to the body for testing purpose only.

Sleepwalker is probably correct that it is a ground. But also check the fuse, as I think the low beams are separate, it could be corrision or if the car has the old type open metal fuse the top or bottom could be ready too break, I had a problem with another system and it turned out the top of the old open metal fuse was bad but not were they are supposed to snap apart but at the top of the fuse, where over the years the metal had worn and was ready to break, thereby causing a erratic connection.

When is the last time you changed bulbs? As the grow older they tend to yellow and get weaker. Also Mercedes usually has a brown ground wire on lights, so see if there is a brown wire, if the lights are wired correctly they will go back to the fuse for the light. No attached to body ground ans the fuse box is earth (body) grounded. I had a problem with my 450SLC headlights, two things were wrong the contact for the sealed beam hologens were corroded and I need new headlights, as the ones in there were old. Now I have a nice white light. I also think I discovered that the high beam and low beam with has two filaments and the hight one are interchangable that is low to high and hight to low. Sleepwalker had the best idea disconnect the ground off the fuse and ground it to the chassis and see what happens? One more thing to check what condition are the wires in? if they are frayed you could be arching and that is a problem. Very nice 190 by the way, always like that model, would like to get my hands on a Cosworth, but they were never sold in the US I understand. I was looking thru a UK published Mercedes magazine and there were quite a few for sale, all with 100K or more miles on them, one near 200K miles, but European tend to keep their cars longr and maintain them better then the ugly Americans.

Sleepwalker our resident Mercedes person am I thinking correctly here?

Thanks,
