#*@! Gremlin in rear turn signals

Seems errant turn signals are common in MBs - I've read a number of threads here with turn signal problems, but no clear solution AFAIK.
For about a year, the rear turn signals in my wife's 320E Wagon would flash rapidly, and I dutifully replaced the bulbs, eliminating the problem, but just for a short time. Then they would flash rapidly again. So I realized I could temporarily solve the problem by just taking the bulb (in its little holder) out, wait a couple of seconds, and then plug it back in. So I've eliminated having to keep buying new bulbs, but the problem still exists.
Someone wrote that attaching a ground wire to the bulb could help. How would I do that? Could both bulb holders be defective, creating a short?
BTW, no error light on the dashboard.
