thumping ?
thanks for the advise on the powersteering, hooked the pump back up and it works ok. Some adjusting but should work fine after.
now fixing that i noticed two new probs.
Replacing air filter noticed oil all over the intake plumbing. is that a vacum prob? or the valves bad/need adjusted(150k)
there is a thumping in 1st and slight begining of 2nd gear. Front flex disc is perfect, rear is a little worn going to replace.
It is a bad thumping sound the more you feather the clutch the less the sound.

is the thump a single or multiple?i would check the condition of the transmission fluid, and replace(do not flush) the fluid and the filter as general maintenance. trans work is something i have yet to enjoy, perhapses we have a trans specialist on hand?
as for the oil in the intake, replace the filter and clean as much of the intake track as possible so you can see where the leak is from. you should have no oil in the intake but if the previous owner never cleaned it you might just have a small problem that has been accumulating for years.
the valves should be checked/adjusted every 15k. as your timing chain stretches the valves actually get tighter(less clearance) it is an easy job and after the first time you will wonder why some people are afraid to open up that joy of engineering

I have owned a 75 300D for about 6 years now. I bought it from the original owner for my son who was in highschool and is now about to graduate college. Several nice things happen I understand when he finally graduates. First ,I dont have to pay those semester dues for his college. Second, he gets a newer car.....so I get the Mercedes back!!!
Anyway, your post caught my eye because 'thumping at takeoff' has happened twice on this car now. The first time it was the drive shaft bearing, this is a metal yoke with a bearing that the driveshaft spins inside. Im sure someone here will provide the correct name of this device. The second time a u-joint bearing cap let go. Thank goodness the opposite lobe of the u-joint held or we might have had a shaft through the floorpan. In both of these cases we heard and felt thump thump thump thump until a bit of speed was acheived. The bearing was much easier and cheaper to replace than the u-joint.
