Default strange sound at rear axle

Hi

My 300SD keeps on getting strange sound while driving above 35 Mph. The sound is comming from the rear axle. Any solutions?

THX

If the sound is a "rattle" I'd check the plastic supports attached to the axle. I'm not sure what they are called, but they connect on both sides near the shocks.

This noise seems like the differential is going out; good luck.
I am having the same problem and the dealer is wanting over $5000 to replace it on my 95 300D.

I wish I bought a Japanese.[:@]

Try checking the driveshaft support berring, sometimes they go bad. Doubt it's the rear diff. unless you had an oil leak.

I have the same problem in my 1982 300D T. It whines when accelerating, but stops when approaching 70MPH, and is very quiet at 80MPH and above. The drive shaft is in the shop getting the middle bearing replaced, etc. Although the flex disc's look okay, I'll also replace them. However, I still strongly suspect it's the differential. So far I was quoated $1200. to replace it. However, the mechanic said there is little danger of it siezing, so I intend to finish some other upgrades before I tackle that very annoying whine.
Best wishes,
charlie

Hi

So if the rear diffrencecial is not leaking that means there is nothing wrong with it. Right?.Because its not leaking. And also when i jack up the car, put the gear in netural and turn the tire left to right and i hear a ticking sound, the sound is comming from u joint in front near the transmission, could that cause the sound? or is it normal.

Thx

Air Imports, University Place, WA replaced ujoints, bearing, support and flex disks. They also balance the shaft by putting the car on a rack, attaching a hose clamp to the drive shaft and periodically marking, then moving the clamp until all vibration was dampened. It solved the "Clunking" sounds and vibration, but it still has the "whine."
Air Imports said the whine is definitely coming from the diffential. They'll install a used differential for $850.

well folks;
here is an update about my car; the noise that I get from the back initially started as a click when I go from reverso to drive; or even if I was going in drive; a month later the noise was accompanied with a grind noise all coming from the back. I took the car to two Specialized MB mechanics; and they both agreed that the noise was the differential; they both checked the flex disks ( front and back); the drive shaft bearing; and the axles; and they all were Ok. Now I am left with no option but to replace the diff; and guess what; the noise did not go; that was a blow to nearly $2000; tomorrow I am taking the car to the dealership; even though in the past they guessed every thing; I am hoping they have a solution to my car. If any one has any ideas please to let me know ( my car is a 1995 300 E Diesel).

thanks
