Default is it rare to have

a 1981 mercedes 300d with over a million miles on it?

the odometer stopped running after 1,920,000, miles several months ago. It still has the original engine, and transmission. The car isn't perfect though, it burns oil...but yet it still runs, and can go up to 75mph. is it normal for a 300d to have so many miles on it?

nope, it hasn't. I have all the paperwork on how many times it has been serviced, and the count of miles, but no engine/odometer tampering

Hello, years ago I read a book called "drive it forever". It had tips and advice for prolonging the life of your car. They had a diesel benz with an odometer on the hub (like a semi) The car had over a million miles on it ,I believe the crankshaft failed and was replaced, but the engine had never been rebuilt. I could be wrong, this was many years ago. I may try to find a copy of it, very interesting reading.

Regards,
John

Still not a bad average if it was rebuilt 4 times... whats that an average of 700,000 between each rebuild?

My dad used to work for Roadway express and some one there trucks had over 4-5 million miles multiple engines and trans but the truck itself was still being used. 700k for a mercedes 115 sounds about right!

I would believe that actually.....

My uncle worked in the government ofa Balkan country and he was given a mercedes 300D and a chauffeur for many many years.....before he retired and settled here in the states.

After traveling all over Europe and the balkans (famous for its BAD roads), the only thing the car ever needed was shocks and oil changes.....

When I asked my uncle if he remembered how many miles the car had, he couldnt remember how many miles, but said it have over 1.2 million kilometeres.....thats pretty close to a million miles...

Unbelievable story.......

On a side note, when my uncle saw the 84 300SD I had, he heard the engine and was so happy to hear that "famous sound", which he described as "kurr ka kurr ka kurr" - He said it reminded him of the gold old days......

Anyway, Cheers.
Tom
