Default Fuel reserve light always blinking

Hello,

It seems my fuel tank has been "off" for awhile. I have an 83
diesel, and I have to keep the tank pretty full or it stops. I have
to always check the fuel filter.
The other day the fuel reserve light came on, the first time I ever saw
this. So I thought I was filling up, but it only took $25, so it was not
really on reserve. Now, the reserve light is constantly blinking.
Is this an expensive fix?...Something I could fix possibly.
I've changed the fuel filters, but that's it.
And is it ok to drive with this blinking.
Also, another topic, but the paint on my car is oxidized.
Is there any type of Gloss i Could put on it, to protect what's
left of the paint. It's the Blue color.
Thanks
Linda J

what happened to your flashing light? This could mean the gas cap is not on tight.

Not in a pre-1996 vehicle. The circuit is completely mechanical. The reserve light wire is shorting to something inside the sending unit.
The fuel level sender needs to be removed and cleaned.
