Engine temp gauge stopped working

Engine temp gauge stopped working
Myengine temp gauge stopped working like two days ago. Prior to that the needle was bouncy at idle, kind of like what happens if the mph cord is stretched. I'm going to assume my mechanic caused the stretchwhen putting in the new engine, but why would the gauge not function at all? Do I have a bad sensor or has a bad connection?

I thought it might have been the engine temp sensor
simple either the lead to the sensor has finally fallen off or has decided to move to someplace warmer.
I just replaced this- It is right behind the thermostat housing on the flat. If i remember correctly it is single prong, but dont quote me on that.[/align]
