Hello everyone, I am looking at buying a 1980 240d. The car seems to be in fare shape good suspension tite overall ect ect. I have driven the car a couple of times and cant put my finger on why the car quits. It runs smooth and starts fine but when you stop at a light or intersection ect and start again it seems to be starving of fuel and runs ruff sometimes or goes dead. Both fuel filters have been changed recently plus is does not happen when driving at normal speeds, it runs perfectly smooth. I also disconnected the fuelline and blew it back to the tank with about 90psi air to clear out the tank strainer/filter to see if it would help temporarily but no success. A diesel mechanic said it my be getting air in the lines from somewhere. I havent seen any fuel leaks anywhere though. Does anyone have any suggestions or had any similar problems? thanks for your time and info would be appreciated

 

does your car have an idle controll on the dash?i have a 79sd and it has adjustment for idle on dash and if its turned to low it stalls at stop sighns .the other cars i have dont have adjustment on dash but maybe yours does.

 

yes it does and it works properly, actually very well compared to my 300sd. It was set to idle a little high if anything. I am wondering too if it could be the primerpump leaking somewhere or maybe the wrong size primary filter. I have a friend whoputto big ofa filter on his and it ran ruff but it didnt not die with him.
