auto recycling has become very expensive these days in CA. When I moved away from L.A. I remember thinking, "its such a shame to leave since there are so many junkyards to support my hobby," and then I remembered that they're sometimes more expensive than buying new.
I needed a new mirror for a 97 Tercel. Every junkyard in Sun Valley I went to wanted over $60. I went to Undercar Parts in Glendale and got a brand new one from Toyota for $48. I needed a window regulator for my W210, which everyone complains about them costing hundreds of dollars. It was something like $78 at Undercar. Other cheap things I've bought there: W210 fan and radiator shroud, $34 and $48 respectively. 88 VW jetta axles, waterpump, waterpump housing, timing belt and tensioner, axle retainer bolts, cap, rotor, plugs, wires front brake calipers and pads; total $308. Master cylinder for 96 impala SS, $21. Alternator for 73 impala, $26. Cheap stuff, and its all good brands. They're just the wholesale warehouse for the all the retail places in town.
All of those junkyards are connected via radio. They have price solidarity, so bargaining is limited. Call Undercar Plus in Glendale. They are limited on what body parts they can get, but you might find that they are as cheap as the junkyards.
I have three numbers; I forget which one is fax, so try all three until you get the right one:
818-548-9686
818-545-4100
323-255-0312 (I think this is the right one.)
