Contemplating first MB Purchase: 300SD
I just test-drove a 325k mile '85 300 turbo diesel. Though I have no experience with MB or diesels, it looksgood and drives decent. The steering is a little loose, I guess it has a worm gear box like the mid-size BMW's of same vintage. The trans has never been rebuilt. I will get it gone over by local Wash DC metro area independent, probably Mitch Carr or Autobahn (both in MD near me). Asking price is $3250.
It was converted to R-134A 7 years ago. New radiator and alternator.
Is it normal for these cars to pull nearly 3k rpm at 70 mph?
Any comments/suggestions? Watchoutforits? I am used to doing my own maintenance and repairs, worked in the trade many years ago.
Thanks,
Steve in MD

Steering is likely not the gear box (never heard one go). It is more likely, the rubber mounts tend to wear out. Jack one side of the car up and rotate the wheel back and forth. It is usually very obvious where it is loose.
325K miles is not much. Had one for at least 550k. As long as the trans fluid is change regularly, it should be fine.

Steve, I bought my 83 300SD about 6 months ago and LOVE IT. Ive tinkered with a few things (had the dash out since the odometer doesnt work). Much to my wife's surprise I got it back in and it works. Its the only benz Ive owned but if its in as good a shape as you say 3200 isnt bad. Offer 2500-2800 and see what happens
good luck Chris
