Default 87 300TDT Fuel Tank Cleaning

Good Day All! I recently purchased my first diesel. I have a problem with my primary filter clogging after approximately 1/2 a tank of fuel. Once I replace the fuel filter, I am good for another 1/2 tank.

It is my goal to fix this problem this weekend. As I believe the infection in the fuel tank to be relatively severe, my plan is to drop the fuel tank. I then want to wash and dry the tank. Then I want to flush the lines from the tank to the filters.

This seems like a big project to me as I am a weekend mechanic. Is there an easier way or is this the best way? The vehicle has 270,000 miles. I do not know if the fuel system has ever been cleaned. I have no maintenance records from the prior owner.

If this is the best procedure, can anyone recommend cleaning products?

In any event, Thank You for your Time and Assistance!!!

Thank You ForcedInduction for the insight and especially the picture. I have the manuals on CD but am not able to find that image.

If I may impose for recommendations:

A good biocide?

Where to purchase replacement fuel lines?

Mineral spirits to clean the fuel lines running to the engine?

Thank You In Advance!!!
