I am looking at two models ('83-300SD or '86-300D) and hoping to get suggestions regarding auto trans durability between the two. Both have under 200k miles. I prefer the styling of the pre-86 models, but will choose the most durable of the two. I need some opinions from long term diesel owners as to which of these two models has the longest lasting auto trans. How many miles is the typical life of these mid 80's automatics assuming good maintenance? The 83 300SD has had the trans replaced recently, but has other short comings. I really would like to find a manual trans diesel, but have no idea what models even offered a manual, or how rare they are to locate. Any suggestions or experience shared will be greatly appreciated, as I am reluctant to buy either without some advice from long term owners. Thanks for any wisdom,

 

I have an 83 300 d turbo,showing 253806.o , and counter is broke to my knowledge has never been any trans problems
