Default 79 300sd transmission...major leak

I'm looking to purchase this car and it is very pretty. It could use paint soon but the interior is very nice with no rust. The price is quite good I think but it has a major transmission leak that seems to be coming from the front seal. It only leaks when the car is running. My first thought was they took the transmission out and put it back in without getting the torque converter set properly and broke the case or the oil pump by running the bolts in. Do the front seals go out commonly in these transmissions? I'm going to go tomorrow or Monday with some coveralls and slide under the car to take a peak. If it doesn't look like they have pulled the transmission already I think I'm going to buy it. It leaks profusely but it will drive onto a trailer. Which transmissions will replace the one in this car? I notice the 79 and 80 doesn't seem to be listed on interchanges for the 81 and newer. What do you guys think? Thanks again for the help.

Is that something typical with these cars? I noticed in your ads you have access to lots of parts and such for these cars. Happen to have a torque converter if I need one?

Thanks for the help.

My bad I had your thread in the fs section mixed up with one from td4runner that said he got parts cars in regularly.

Thanks again,

I do have a trans from an 84sd. It won't help you much but, the torque converter may be interchangeable. If anyone knows for sure let us know. I would be happy to sell it too you very reasonably. If it will work, I would be happy with 20.00 and whatever the post office would charge to flat rate ship it to you. Car was running 2weeks ago. I am pulling the motor soon so you have a little time to find out if that is the problem and if its interchangeable.

Well I compared them on autozone and the part numbers are different. I appreciate the offer though.

Too bad they weren't interchangeable. I am sure you will find someone who has it.
