Default 300 SDL What is this chrome trim?

I'm getting an '87 300 SDL shortly. The car has chrome trim covering the tops of all four wheel wells. I don't see this often and am wondering if it is a factory option, and if so, what it signifies or is called. Also, since I will be repainting the car, I'm wondering about the pin stripe. Is the stripe a kit that the body shop applies, or is it done by hand?

many thanks

Hi Bruce. They are called chrome wheel arches. As far as I know, it was not a stock item offered on the cars.

Most of the time, they are aftermarket add ons. Be careful though, they usually get put on to hide something and can have a lot of dirt and grit trapped in there.
