300 d boost control?
Hi,
I have an '83 turbo 300 with an Otto-matic, a replacement for a natural-aspirated 300 with a 5-speed manual (German grey-market car). Clever idea 149 is to transplant the manual into the turbo car, and have the best of all possible worlds. I know that the job is doable, particularly because I have the old car to take parts off.
One possible problem was pointed out to me by a very experienced Mercedes mechanic, who said that the turbo lag of the 300 turbo engine was so pronounced that it didn't make a very happy car, particularly in traffic, because it was always surging.
I've driven a four-cylinder turbo with manual (In England) and did notice this, but with the four it wasn't a big deal.
Anyone have an opinion on whether this would be a problem?
Assuming that it is, I came up with clever idea 149b, which is to install an adjustable waste-gate on the turbo, so that in round-town use the turbo could be dialed down to low enough boost so that it doesn't cause trouble, and then be cranked up when driving on the highway. I can also see the value of turning down the boost on icy roads.
Does this make sense?
I think I know that adjustable waste gates are available for various rice-burner cars, and the question is whether one of these could be adapted.
Thanks for any comments.

I hadn't noticed that the 240 had a 300 engine, so I guess you have driven this configuration and think it's fine.
I'm curious to know if you've seen a driver-operable adjustable wastegate on a 5-cyl.
Also if you've had any problems with warped exhaust valves on the aftercooled engine.
