Default 1983SD A/C failing in Houston

My AC compressor is starting to fail. I had it in for a look and was told it is clutching in and out causing the belt to whine. Also a leak at the manifold. Repair and replacement was quoted $2500, a no go at that price. Anyone in Houston have this repair done before? I normally use Texas German Autohaus, but in this case, it just doesn't make $ense. I have 360K estimated miles, so I don't want to give up just yet.

Thanks,
G

Sounds like it's time to get dirty. Check your local boneyard for the parts and take on the project yourself is my recommendation. When finished you'll have to bring thecar to the A/C shop to have the system (1) evacuated (2) checkedfor leaks and (3) recharged with R12 or an R12 replacement refrigerant. Definitelydo notconvert the system to R134a. This repair approach will save you a load of cash.
