1983 300d
Hey all, new here, i just picked up a 1983 300D turbo and it has an oil leak, i thought it was comeing from the rear main seal, but closer inspection it looks like it's comeing from the oil filter houseing where it bolts to the block. Is this something that happens often or am i just the lucky one to have one come loose or maybe a pressure releaf valve stuck building to much pressure and it blew it out ? any help would be much appreciated.

Allen bolts are tight. Does the filter houseing bolt up flush with the block ? is there anything behind it ? I'm thinking, to do it right, i should take the whole houseing off, and clean everything up, then bolt it up with a new gasket. Or, unbolt it, pull it back and clean the old gasket off, then bolt it up with a new gasket ?

Different parts places sell different types of Gaskets; some look like just paper.
However, one of the members on another forum told me there is an updated gasket that is made of a waffled material' see pic. If you enlarge the pic you will see the waffled detail.
Also what I do when faced with a shipping charge issue from internet parts places is I stock up on other things like Air Filters, Oil Filters, trans filters and so on. With some part places after you go above something like $50 the shipping is free.
There is also a chance that NAPA might sell the individual gasket.

Hey Just throwing this out there but I too had a oil leak which at first seemed to be coming from the same area (mounting plate to engine) but upon closer inspection wasn't the mounting gasket at all but the bottom oil line to/from the filter housing. It was running along the mounting plate and dripping off looking as if the gasket was leaking. I cleaned the entire area thoroughly with brake clean, with vehicle lifted started climbed under and watched. Tightened fitting that screws into filter housing and no leaks since.
