Default 1982 240d fuel injection problems

I bought a 1982 240d The problem is when I start it cold it starts GREAT.... When the engine gets hot it dies wont restart until it cools down again. I was going to change the fuel filter(plastic one) and the fuel filter(metal canister). Also on the #3 injector fuel return line it has a small leak. The rubber fuel line connecting to he metal return line to the tank also has a small leak due to an old rubber hose. The car sat in my sisters garage for 3(three) years. will this correct the problem or is it another problem... Thanks -jayrow-

I believe the fuel pump on this car is inside the fuel injection pump.
If the strainer in the fuel tank is clogged could block the ability of fuel pump to suck fuel to the injection pump.
Leaks in the lines can give problems also,so fix them.
I've seen the fuel pump that sucks the fuel from the tank to the injection pump give up ability to suck.
One could replace the injection pump to fix that or install and electric fuel pump to feed the injection pump.
You could clean out the tank strainer and check the other 2 filters.
If you could hitch up a fuel line to the injection pump so 1 end is in a container of diesel fuel and see if the engine still quits when warm.
If it does not quit when warm with this arrangment you'll know the fuel supply has a problem.
If it does quit still when warm could be time for a electric feeder pump.

If your Hand Primer is the Old Style with the Aluminum body it needs to be pushed all the way down and screwed in to seal properly Also the same Old Style Hand Primer is noted for leaking air when the get old.

I would replace the Fuel Return hose and the 2 pieces of Fuel Inlet Hoses with 5/17 Fuel Hose from the regular Auto Parts store. It is often made by GoodYear and has the number SAE 30R70 and is rated for use with regular Diesel Fuel. Some places sell Gates Fuel Hose; as long as it has the SAE 30R70 it has the same rating.

I would look under the rear of the Car where the Fuel Hoses come out from the bottom of the Fuel Tank. It those hoses are wet with Fuel they are leaking and Air can be pulled into the one that supplies the Fuel. If after draining the Fuel Tank they should be changed.

Thank you all for the information I will check those problems and get back to you. A local Shop said that they would drain the tank, replace fuel line upgrade fuel injection pump for $400.00 US. Is this a good price for the work that is required. Thanks -Jayrow-
