1977 240D questions
ok here are a couple of the issues I have with my car that are driving me nuts...my high beams do not work (had to adjust my driving lights up so that I could pull out the **** for high beams) possibly the dimmer switch? it gives me either lights on or off no hi/low....and yes I have replaced all fuses under the hood including high beam fuses...also no dash lights (the ones on the climate control work fine but where the heck is the adjustment for those for brighter dimmer?) three months after replacing all fuses under hood my l/r parking lights and radio no longer work the regular (both) parking lights do work (have to replace again i guess but why?) any hints on this would be helpful also how difficult is it for the somewhat experienced do it yourself-er (I am an aircraft mechanic but not auto) to t/s the a/c system?

At the risk of stating the obvious, Sounds like you have a short somewhere and unless you are comfortable using a multimeter you might want to take it to someone that specializes in electrical issues. The dimmer control ( at least on my 82 ) is the left **** on the instrument cluster. It is a rheostat or ( potentiometer ) what ever you want to call it, anyway sometimes simply turning it back and forth a few times will get it working again. Or you could pull the instrument cluster out and spray some contact type cleaner into it. I have old guitar amps and use a product called tweak that works real well. Please not spray from the **** from front wont help.
But in truth it sounds like you need someone with an electrical back ground.
Good luck.
By the way this post really belongs somewhere else, this section should be related to diesel questions only.
To the last poster, I am getting 34 mpg with my 240D. But I drive all highway and don't exceed 65mph.

ok before I tell you the MPG I appear to be getting I must tell you my measurements do not come from the stock speedometer it does not work instead what I use is a program called runtastic on my droid that I have compared against my explorer with a working speedometer/odometer over several hundred miles for accuracy and this app is very accurate...now with that said according to the mileage I track with this app I am getting on the average at or near 30 mpg in combined driving with about 40 percent (rough estimate) city driving it of course does vary from a low of about 26 mpg to 30 as I do not always use the same routes to get where I go...hope this helps...if you are getting very low mpg in combined driving you may wish to run a compression check.....NOTE before running a compression check make sure your valves are adjusted to specks or your compression test will be off

thanks for your response my hi/lo beam is in the turn signal as far as dash dimmer switch I am not able to locate one unless it is the wheel type switch on my center console by my emergency flasher switch...the **** you are speaking of on mine goes from l/parking light, r/parking light, both parking lights, off and on...(somewhat in that order i may have the order a little messed up lol and pulls out for the driving (we call them fog) lights
