I am looking to buy a 1964 190 Mercedes diesel. I have always wanted a older diesel. Not this old, but when I found it i love the body style. Infrequently i cant find very much information on it.
the body is straight and she runs. It does need a new battery and has a cold starting problem..
Any information about the car at all would be greatly appreciated.

Don't know much about Mercs that old, but I imagine that the cold start issue is glow-plug system related. Please don't use ether to get it started - that could destroy the engine.

Maybe Forced or someone on here can supply a diagram of the glow-plug circuit to help with diagnosis.

 

is the 190 have the same motor as 240d?

 

So i found out the 190 and 240 are not the same but can i swap in a 300dt motor?

 

Cold start problems are general state of tune issues: valve adjustment, air filter, fuel filter, oil weight, battery strength, glow plugs.

 

Cold start issues could also be poor compression issues caused by the Engine being worn out. What is the Milage on it?
If the owener would let you you could do a compression check on it.
Harbor Freight sells an inexpensive kit but I am not sure if it it backwards compatiable that to that year. Also the Injector adapter has some volume in it that would decrease the compression reading slightly.

 

I love the body of that car, but know nothing about, I am having the same problem with my 1972 280SE (not much info on this car available) i've been to a few auto book stores and scoured the internet.

Anyone who needs more info on a particular older Benz should check out the mercedes benz classic center and look for the owner's and maintenance manuals for their car. They often come on DVD and are usually cheaper than Haynes or Chilton's.
