Default is it okay to washthe diesel engine?

I have a 300dt (1984) and as you can imagine the engine looks like it was deep fried in engine oil. It is the greasiest, dirtiest, oilist grossest thing imaginable. A friend tells me to wash it with a hose and/or a powerwahser. Is this ok to do? have any of you folks done it? I am considering it.

I would recomend against spraying it with a hose unless you could get it completly dry wouldn't the water on the metal lead to corrosion? Use a small brush and an engine cleaner.

I don't think it's going to really hurt the engine considering when it rains water is getting in from the grille and all over the engine. Engine cleaner is the safest way to go...
