gearbox S320 (1996)

gearbox S320 (1996)
No "separation" between D and 4; shifter "slides" straight into 4 (left hand side position of the <4 :: D> position). Car seems to be driving fine. I'm not a mechanic, but this could be:
1. a spring that holds shifter in the D position;
2. the shifter assembly;
3. a gearbox problem.
Any ideas?..
