track rod for SLK230 1998

hi, all,
After removing an out side track rod end, I have discovered the problem is a ball joint halfway between the wheel and the drop arm. Can this be removed, no, it continues to the other wheel, who's bright idea was that then?
So the track rod ends can be replaced, but the ball joint itself cannot, it seems the track rods are only sold (if you can find one) complete, wheel to wheel.
But of course someone may have repaired a ball joint, can the joint be separated?.
The bottom line is, I need this sorted, any answers gratefully received, any for sale ?
