Help!
I have a 1980 300D, with an aftermarket turbo charger and a secondary heated fuel system that allows it to run on vegetable oil. That's not the point.
There's a black vacuum line that comes off the injection pump and goes throught the firewall. I think I accidentally pulled it free of it's spot, up under the steering column. Anyway, at some point the car stopped shutting down when I killed the ignition. I've checked the two brown lines and they appear intact. So I suspect the black one's the culprit.
It's not the worst fate, I get to look at the engine and my SVO-conversion a lot. Any help, however, will be much appreciated. Thanks a ton!

Hello....got the same linedetached on my recently aquired 1980 240D......the two largerbrownlines to the vacuum control on the switch are still attached and mine shuts down normal....I am having trouble finding out where this little black line goes...the partial diagram I have says ( to cabin vent passenger compartment ) I do not know if this means the line goes to a vent or if it means the line itself is vented to the passenger compartment...I have the instrument panel out repairing the clock and light rheostat and cannot find anywhere this hose should go....let me know ....thanks..kevin

Hello again......a very knowledgeable source says the vac. line you speak of is supposed to justhang loose in the cabin footspace...this is the normal atmosphere vent for the vac control valve....I agree it looks like it should go somewhere but this is supposed to be normal.....glad to know this ...I have spent some time looking.....kevin

Ash,

Going off topic for a moment -- who's veg oil conversion kit did you go with? Are you using filtered waste veg oil or pure veg oil? I'm very seriously considering converting my 240D to atwo tankdiesel/veg system but I don't know anyone who has done it so I can ask real-world questions.

The main question for me is concerning the veg oil source; do you use new, pure oil (what kind) or do you use waste oil (what kind) from a restaurant or some other source?

It seems to me that collecting, straining, and filtering wasteoil could be more trouble than just using pure veg, or for that matter just going to the service station and filling up with diesel.

Your experience?

I kinda built one from parts... I got a tank and hose from Greasel, and the valves from JC Whitney, and everything else from the hardware store/Radio Shack/Kragen. It's a problem, finding oil that isn't a pain to clean. Here in the Bay Area, a group called Biodiesel Oasis is getting ready to start selling SVO for $1 a gallon or so, pre filtered. I'll be all over that when it comes around.
I think if I had it to do over again, I might not have gone to all the trouble to add the second tank and valves. I might have just splash mixed SVO into my gas tank in the summer months. I've heard a lot of anecdotal evidence to support this, but as always, YMMV. Feel free to drop a line to (me) driad_98@yahoo.com.
Cheers.
Oh! Thanks for the note, Kevin. That black line does indeed just hang out down there... should have a tag on it that sez "Ja, deese ist richtig."
