RE: new guy
IMHO I'd stay with the 996, the 500SL is quite a different car in the sports car sense. Or wait for the new 911, which I read is gone back to some of the 996 styling cue's but is faster, handles better and more comfortable. I had a 86 911 and I still kick myself for trading it in for a Z3. The 911 was tempermental, but what a car. The Z3 was OK modern compared to the 86, but nothing on the road can come close to a Porsche, not even a Ferrari IMHO. Porsche is argurably the best engineered car in the world. Ilve driven several SL including a 500, if you never owned a Porsche or driven one for a long amount of time, you'll love the 500, but it is more of a touring convertible then a sportscar. If your a sportscar freak like I was then stay with Porsche. I hope this makes sense?

RE: new guy
911 is really good in handling and speed.
500SL got more room, got all the speed you need, got more options.
bring the two cars together side by side, one of them got the looks that says: i'm more better.
