I posted a few questions earlier this week regarding a 240D my wife and I were looking at and we made the purchase last night. It is a 1974 red 240d. The car appears to be in very good shape, straight body, brand new tires and the interior is very clean. I believe the car spent most of it's life in Texas so there is very little rust. Car as 209k miles but still runs pretty darn good. Not real smoky like I have had many people tell me it would be. I am anxious to see what kind of milage we can get.

We live in Kansas City so we figured there was no better time to purchase a 32 year old diesel vehicle than right after a big snow storm

I just bought a '76 240D last weekend. It is really rough, but I fell in love with this car. I'm still trying to figure out what the engine is, since it's not the original. I would love to see pics of your '74. If you have any questions about your car or anything, let me know and maybe we can bounce off each other, I've never owned a diesel or a mercedes before so I'm flying wild trying to restore my car.
