fuel starvation due to electrical??mercedes 300E (early model) please help!
Hello everybody!
I am new to the forum, bought my Mercedes 300E 89 registered (early model) last year. Amazing car! Had loads of fun and long distance travel with it! Runs on gas and petrol, landi Renzo gas conversion, I paid £1000 for the car and I have done 8000 miles in it. Although I love the car very much, it did have just a small problem which has been getting worse recently and now it just won’t go at all!
The problem started small; some times when the car is tilted on a hill (tilted from side to side) the engine would cut out and would start ok! But cut out straight away unless I give it some revs. So not too much of a problem but noticed it happened mostly when it was wet! It would do it no matter if it runs on gas or on petrol; also I have noticed when this happens it starts to back fire. Now it happened the other day but will not start any more! It’s not the gas conversion because it has a fail safe mechanism, if the gas side breaks down, then it reverts to petrol. When it went completely, it was dry but very cold weather 0 degrees.
I have noticed when the small problem first occurred, I had problems starting it if the fan heater was on full and the headlights switched to on. When I turn off the electrical appliances, she started ok!
The AA roadside service mechanic had a look said it’s not the relay for the petrol or the petrol pump! Which usually goes with fuel starvation, Petrol pump is buzzing away! Engine can be heard firing but no fuel! Phoned up the guy I bought the car off and he seems to know a little bit and said to look at the air intake pipe which comes from a electrical cylindrical device about 2 inches wide then goes into the intake manifold (sometimes comes off and shuts down the fuel to the engine) checked this and it is ok!
So I now have a feeling that this electrical device that shuts off the fuel isn’t working properly or something is stopping the air mixture? I’m not a mechanic but would like to know what the problem is so I can fix it my self!
I would be grateful and would appreciate it very much if somebody could give me some tips on the cause of the problem!
Sorry for the long winded storey but, cant afford to put it into a garage at the moment still studying at university! Please help???
Kind regards
Paul Jones
