Hi, I want to buy my first mercedes diesel I was predominately looking at a 1977 240D. i have learned from ths group it might not be the best year but not the worst. Heater is difficult to change apparently. It has 275kms. Well kept. $1500.

Or a 1983 240D, $740, needs new bonnet/hood and front lights after a little smash up. Otherwise sound.

Or 1982 300SD but has "lazy transmission from 2nd to 3rd whatever that means.

Someone also posted that ithe 240D is not a safe car.

I have a new teenage driver and was hoping the slow acceleration would make it safe. We live in a mountainous area with lots of rain. Will this add to safety concerns? I don't need speed just reliability, safety and good mileage in a nice ride.

Any comments much appreciated.
