Default Transmission Fluid

Hope someone may have an idea about this; 2001 SLK320, with 17K miles. This a.m., saw a trail of Xmission fluid (about2 oz.) under the car. It started at the front of the garage, to where I stopped the car in the garage. No where else. Jacked the car up, let it run, no drips. Ran the car down the road, came back, no drips. Have done nothing with the Xmission. Has anyone got any ideas, or had this type of problem?

Hi,
Are you sure it is trans fluid?
The car has an undertray so it is possible that a small leak suddenly deposited itself because of a change of angle of the car.
Could it be the PAS fluid due to being overfull / steering turned when stationary / too full?
Difficult to say where it is coming from without a look at what is damp / wet / oil marked etc.

Unfortunately you can't check the auto trans fluid yourself without a special tool.

If it suddenly arrived it is more likely to be a cooler pipe fracxtured rather than a weep from a sump gasketr.

Have you had any work done on the car recently. Service, added extra engine oiul etc?

HiStuart, I was able to find the leak. It was from the Xmission pan gasket. I tighten the pan bolts 1/2 turn, and have had no more leaks. Car only has 16800 miles on it. Strange the gasket was leaking. What does it take to check the fluid level? How is fluid added?

Fluid is added thru tube at rear top of engine bay. Prise off the redtab and discard.
Black bit can be slid on and off.
You need an MB dipstick or make one up using a coilly curtain rod etc.
Oil is measured from bottom of sump up, at normal op temp (80c)

Hi Bazzle,

Out of interest what is the

1 Checking procedure. Engine running in N, OFF or in D etc. since one needs to ensure the torque converter is full.

2. What is the official MB oil spec please?

Hi Bazzel, thanks for info on Xmission. Not sure if your tape measure is in inches or mm?? About how long is the total measuring stick? I will look for the red cap. I had to tighten the bolts againbecause still had small leak. Guess the gasket just compressed.

Hi,
I don't have the specific torque figure but be very careful not to overtighten the sump bolts which go into an alloy casting.

Yes Stuart, I really did not like tightening down those torx bolts. It was the only thing which stopped the leak. I saw the torque value somewhere, but my torque wrench is missing at this time.....20 year old son.

Does anybody have the correct part# for the auto trans dipstick for the new (2007) 7sp auto?
