SLK 230 Radio
Howdy guys. I have an 98 SLK 230 that I want to replace the head unit with one that has a cd player in it. My system only has a cassette. My new car sticker indicates I have the 6 speaker Bose sound system. Is there a way to replace this head unit with one that plugs in? or is it a whole rewire job. Thanks for any input.

You have to buy an adapter kit. I think Scosche sells one for it, but I got mine from Ebay.
There is a kit that moves the MAF sensor to the filter-side of the car. This will improve throttle response. Also a larger crank pulley, K&N air filter and ECU upgrade will help.
An awesome-looking cosmetic upgrade is to find yourself a front bumper from an SLK 32. It really gives the car a much more aggressive look. Got mine from Ebay used for $150.
Also try www.myroadster.net and look around. The Bipes Vario Roof Commander is the best thing I've added to my SLK by far. Mercedes should've built it that way.
Hope this helps,

RE: SLK 230 Radio
hi guys, i recently found this site. it's a great site for ppl that owns mercedes. i recently got a 2001 SLK 230. i got back from this one shop today, and they quote me 600 dollars for adapter kit and a IPOD compatible ALphine stereo. this really is kind of expensive. i was wondering is there another way to do it? probably not, so is there a cheaper way to do it? the deck is like 250 dollars, and the adapter kit is like 400. i think it's kind of expensive...

My adapter kit was $20 from Ebay, My head unit is a Pioneer Premier; plays wma, mp3 aac, and has Sirius built in. It was $350 at Best Buy, but my wife found it on the net somewhere for $225 new. Bought the Sirius receiver to plug into the back of it for $100, bought an amp, capacitor and wiring from Ebay for around $120, used the existing Bose speakers and removed the factory amp from the passenger side footboard.
The stereo looks awesome, sounds amazing and cost me less than $600. Had I just gone with a head unit and wiring harness it would've been about $250.
