Default Faulty Roof Mechanism???

Hi all,

I was hoping somebody might have an idea as to what is causing the roof on my SLK230 to delay in opening.
It seems that it has a mind of its own, and decides to open when its ready. I can pull the switch back and the windows come down no problem, but then it seems to think about opening the roof, but not always doing it straight away. It sounds like its doing it, but then does't and the button flashes. I then have to push it forward to reverse the process then pull it back down, only then will it go down either straight away or after a slight delay. Its the same when trying to put it up.

Is this a common problem and will it cost alot to fix?

Its a 1999 model, and I love it to bits but it can be a bit embarassing when it doesn't go up!!! Especially when trying to look cool!!!

Hope someone can help.....

Regards
Young, inexeperienced SLK driver

take it to the shop and read for any faults and actual values. see what's malfunctioning.

Some models suffer from faulty switches either in panel above windscreen or in boot.
One of these "may" prevent the cycle from continuing.
On the http://www.benzworld.org/forums (R170 SLK Class) this has been mentioned many times.

I had the same problem. Turned out to be microswitches in the mechanism for the roof. There might have been bad wiring as well. The Mercedes dealer took care of it but since it was intermitten it took them a long time to fix.

either wet controller in boot (next to spare wheel on right, or an intermittant micro sw in roof mechanism

Mercedes built in sensors to detect excessive battery drain and electric motor heat. If either of these occurs, the light will blink and the top will not function.

i had this problem when my car was 4 days old....The dealer said that they replaced all 9 microprocessors that control the raising and lowering process. Since my car was brand new, i never saw the bill but can only imagine what that must have cost!
