my god, is there anyone out there that does not have this problem. you would think that for an almost $40,000 car, they could just have the console plastic dyed the specific color, not just cheap out and paint it. our 2000 SLK did the same thing. if the warranty is up, it's your dime from what everyone else seems to say.

Mine was peeling when I bought it. I ended up pulling the entire interior from the car. I rubbed it down with denatured alchohol, sanded the peeled areas and then painted the whole thing. I used flat black for the colored areas and semi-gloss for the areas normally black. I think it turned out allright, but I'm on the lookout for a wrecked Crossfire. I'd like to replace the whole thing.

Just posted my solution to this problem to "Enricoroberto" from 8/19/06.
Check out my solution.
Incidentally investigated everything including upholstery to the console. Found just repairing it like I did in this post works well and the fixes take me just a few minutes now. I have a hard time telling where I have fixed the scratches prior.

I have a 1998 SLK230. Only had 34,000 miles on it after 14 years. Everything worked fine except the interior paint got rubbed off. And the black underneath started showing. Always happened on the hard plastic surface. Never on the soft surface.
Removed the center storage bin cover. 2 screws are all that you have to remove.
Took it to Walmart. The paint matching machine there could not handle a thick cover like mine. They suggested me to try Lowe's.
At Lowe's, the lady put it on the machine and the monitor displayed the matching color. She said it seemed a little too dark in comparison. So she selected a 50% setting. The color came out a little light. So she added another 25%. Still a little light.
She was trying to add another 12.5% (smaller steps according to her). That was when I told her to go ahead with another 25% to reach the full strength.
It was a perfect match.
I used my 1/2" flat watercolor brush to paint the interior. On the second day I could not even tell where I painted.
Three weeks later, I rubbed my hand hard over the handle area where most of the paint peeling happened. Nothing came off.
The paint I used at Lowe's,
Valspar
Ultra
Paint + primer
Interior
Satin
$28 for one gallon
I have uploaded a photo as attached.
