Default To buy or not to buy?

Hi all,
I am a newcomer to this site. I am in the midst of car shopping. I have come across a 1999 SLK, 32K Miles which I can get for about $17,000 from a private seller.
Here are my questions to the pros. I live in Minnesota and of course would not want to drive it too much in the winter, but will on occasion as it would be hard to park such a beautiful car. Is the hard top as good and solid as I have read? Just like a coupe?
And, the most important question. How is the reliability? From what I've seen, 1999 was a good year as far as reliability and consumer reports gave this year a reliability thumbs up. Anyone have any information or first hand knowledge?
I would appreciate any feedback from everyone - pros and cons.
Thank you in advance.

Freddy

Thanks Bazzle.
I will try that.
Just curious? Is this not the place to ask this question?
Hopefully I end up buying and then can talk about ownership issues instead of buyng issues..
Thanks.

Of course you can ask anything you want here. We will all try to answer your requests. However, I for one own an '01 SLK 320, so I can't give you an honest opinion about a '230 since I have never had one. You might go find a '320 to drive before buying the '230 so you can see the difference and may be able to justify spending a little more for this great improvement in performance. Many forum members are very happy with the '230, as I am sure you will be. Be sure to get it thouroughly checked out BEFORE you buy it by a qualified tech. Happy car hunting!

Of course, but I have found the other forum to be a lot more active at the moment..

I have an 1998 SLK230 with a pulley kit and love it. Power is more than adequate.

Well,
I bought the car. I knew after driving it, I would love it.
I haven't had the opportunity to drive it too much, what with the Minnesota winters and all.
But, I absolutely love the car and cannot wait until the summer.
Thanks to all who helped me in my search.

Now I can officially post as an owner.

Freddy
