Default Top control module

I am in process of resurrecting a 94 SL500. My present project is the top control module. I am beginning to suspect that the module is bad. If you manually release the hard top, when you set it back on and activate the switch it will latch, also the windows and roll bar work. I do not know if they are in the module or not on the 94. That is the only top function that works. I have checked all of the top circuit wiring and micro switches with a DVOM and everything traces out, the only thing I can not verify is that all the wires are in the correct location on the main plug. I know it has been tampered with but I can not imagine that anyone would have switched any wires. I am waiting for a mercedes repair manual DVD and hopefully that will have a wiring diagram. I digress. I have been searching forums for information and have seen that there is apparently a reset sequence for the top module and I read in one place that there is a connection with the door handles??? Can anyone verify this? I am reluctant to spend the price for a module if it is not necessary. I don't know who said it but I am living proof that there is nothing in the world more expensive than a cheap mercedes.

You probably ought to read/erase codes and operate the top. If it still does not work, then read again and troubleshoot based upon the codes found. The procedure is described here: http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r129...pre-94-a.html? The socket for the top controller on your car is #21.

I have a used top controller for sale. It works with all cars manufactured prior to January, 1994. If interested, please send an email. I will be determining a price shortly, and I would guess it to be $350-$500.

I am not sure of the build date on my car but believe it to be after 1/94. I have looked at a wiring diagram for mercedes top up to 1/94 and it differs from my wiring, different colors at the switch and at least one of the vacant locations in the module plug on the pre 1/94 is occupied in my module plug. Hopefully the DVD I am waiting for has the correct diagram. I did read in one forum post that there is a connection with the door handles? Can you verify or dismiss? Thanks

There are signals from the doors for controlling the windows, but they have nothing to do with top operation.
