Default SL 500 or 600 ?

This subject has likely been beatened to death in here but I didn't get the info I wanted with a search (could be operator error)....it is my intention to buy a used SL this year...the car will be driven for pleasure for less than 2000 miles a year...my criteria are value, dependability and cost of maint...I am assuming the insurance would be a wash. My assumption was that I would get the 600...but as I begin to research and shop I have heard that the 600 is much more complicated and can be very expensive to repair...especially the suspension... I have to admit that I do not know how valid those concerns are...so if you have some strong opinions and experiences (good or bad) that you think would be helpful, believe me I will listen...thanks in advance for your trouble...bart

Bart, you may find this 129 Series Buyer's Guide of some value...

http://www.brianclifton.com/cars/r129-buyers-guide

Personally, I prefer the SL500's, as they're simply easier for me to understand and to do my own minor maintenance, produce acceptable gas economy at 18-20mpg, and most importantly, there are several highly qualified MB Independent Service operations near me that I'm very confident in their competence and honesty. I mention that because you're going to need Tech Services for whichever car you buy. Your best bet may be to make your QUALIFIED local MB Independent Service Techs your new best friends and get their opinion on the 500 vs 600. They'll also know of the good cars locally that are for sale by their existing customers. These guys will also be your resource to do Pre Purchase Inspections on the cars you like; best $100+/- you ever spent.

Good hunting, and good luck.

Bob

If I were to recommend, I'd say the 500; if I were to buy, then it would be the 600.

Is that primarily because of the potential suspension problems ?

I would buy the 600 (in fact looking for the perfect 129 600, or 72), because I can and do all my own repairs.

If I were not mechanically inclined, I would go for the 500 simply because it must be cheaper to maintain than a 12 cyl.

Not for any particular reason, just that the car is more complex. If you buy any highly engineered car, you can expect failures. Which ones doesn't matter; just plan on it.
