Cellphone Use in a 2006 SL 500
I'm a newbie to SL 500 ownership. I've read the operator's manuals for the SL Class and the COMAND system, and I see an item of concern. On page 266 of the operator's manual, and repeated on page 88 of the COMAND manual, the following warning is given: "Never operate radio transmitters equipped with a built-in or attached antenna (i.e. without being connected to an external antenna) from inside the vehicle while the engine is running. Doing so could lead to a malfunction of the vehicle's electronic system, possibly resulting in an accident and/or personal injury. Radio transmitters, such as a portable telephone or a citizens band unit should only be used inside the vehicle if they are connected to an antenna that is installed on the outside of the vehicle."
Does this mean that if I receive or make a call from my Galaxy S21 5G phone with the engine running I'm risking a malfunction of the SL's electronics, or did this apply to the older analog or bag phones that are now obsolete? My S21, like every other phone I know of, has no provision for an outside antenna. Since I know of no other vehicle that is subject to this malfunction, a further question is why would Daimler Chrysler produce a vehicle that can be foiled by something as ubiquitous as a cellphone? For now, I turn the phone off when I'm driving the SL, but what would happen if I forget to turn it off and receive a call or text message while underway? I'm hoping some tech-savvy forum members can enlighten me about this concern. Thanks.
