Question Back flip convertible mechanism!

Hello everybody I have a problem with my 1990.500sl.
When i run the mechanism for opening the soft top. everything is okay unntil the last mechanism, that is when the back flip should go down and compelete the opening prosess. and go into lock. This flip will not go down, it remains open, and must be put down and locked manually. same problem when i have locked it manually, and shall start the electric mechanism for closing the soft top. The back flip will not open(it just are clicking). So the soft top can not come out in the open. for then and be closed again. Please help me

I just bought one and have the same problem but onle sometimes other wise it works fine... replacing the top in the next few weeks well see if that helps as the orig top is quite depressed. Also want to fix the top switch it has gone through the console.

How do I manually release back flip cover to bring the soft up on my 1990 SL500 since my hydraulics have failed.
Much appreciate.
Thanks

there are pins just behind the roll bars that you can use your top manual openning tool to open the storage compartment. As far as testing, open the hood and at the diagnostic port on firewall just behind the passenger side strut mount. turn your key to the on position and short #1 and #10 ports for 3 or 4 seconds and then look at your top switch and count the number of flashes. repeat until the code repeats. these codes are limited. there is away of testing every switch or sensor in the top circuit. but requires a test meter or light with battery and testing on the controller connector in the back passenger side storage compartment. The large connector on the long side of the controller. one set of tests with the top down and another with the top up.. with top up, windows up, roll bar up these pins should be open 10,22,27,29,30,31 and 16,17,18,19,20,21,23,24,25,26 and 28 should be closed. with the top down, storage compartment open, windows and roll bar down. 16,17,18,19,20,21,23,24,25,26,28 should be open and 10,22,27,29,30 and 31 should be closed. when my top stopped with the bow up, it was the microswitch on the small bow cylinder on the drivers side. you can't buy it separately from the cylinder and is expensive. I think you maybe able to modify an aftermarket switch "IF" that is the issue.... Gaggar, what's wrong with the hydraulics? And yes they are worth the effort, it will help in the pocket book to learn how to do as much you possibly can. don't be afraid of her. better make her a hobby too.
