Almost scammed on a grey market 560SL
Well, I posted about a week ago about a 560SL I bought. I stated it was a 1984, but soon after putting a deposit down I kicked myself and realized there is no such SL, because they hadnt made the car until 1986! I went back to the lady, who seemed nice, but when I confronted her with the situation on the car, she soon changed demeanor. She said she was tired of getting "flack" for her SL because it was a 1984, and I tried to nicely tell her that it could not be. I asked to see the title, and under model, there was a blank. This was clearly a grey market car, all she had to do was put emblems on, and when I double checked the engine, It was a 3.8, not a 5.6 V8. I feel so stupid I didnt pick up on it - it was just that it was only $9800 with 91,000 miles on it. I have had my share of 80s Mercedes, even rare imported models, and she was trying to tell me her brother and husband knew all about cars because they built drag racers. She clearly knew nothing about the car, had no records to show of work done, and faltered under questioning! She walked away in a huff, and so anyways I went and found a real, 1986 560SL with 43,000 in showroom condition. I guess you get what you pay for.

RE: Almost scammed on a grey market 560SL
you seem to know about these things...I have a REAL 1984 500sl (grey market) w/AMG package and BBS wheels and under 24,000 miles on it. I know it's rare and in wonderful condition. I met someone who spent $35,000 on a 1978 380sl with 150,000 miles on it...I'm guessing mine could be worth at least that much...what do you think?
