Default Air Condition problem

Hi - My first time on this forum so I really hope someone can help me out here. I have a 87 560 SL roadster. I cannot control what the a/c does. I had a new control panel put in and that helped nothing. The a/c always blows thru the defrosters no matter what I do. The fresh air baffels are closed and nothing I do makes them operate. I think I have a vacumn problem but cannot figure out what is supposed to go where. I have a shop manuel but it doesn't tell me anything about the vacumn system. The switch for recirculating interior air has on the back three places for tubes but I only have two. What terminals do they go on #5, #6 or #7 or should there be three hoses. Does anyone know where I can get a vacumn drawing. I know this is asking a lot but I really need help. Thanks

Kelly, it sounds like you've got vacuum line and/or pod diaphram problems in the system. This is very common in SL's this age; not expensive in terms of parts, but the components of the system are a PIA to get to.

For a schematic of the system, go to the MB Club of Russia website...

http://www.auto-parts.spb.ru/cat/cat...&client=dr2000

Enter your complete VIN # where indicated

Select 107, either US or AUS

Select system you want to look at from the list that pops up

For a short term 'McGuyver Fix', you can get the air blowing through the center vents by wedgeing the flap open behind the center vents. Shine a flashlight thru the vents and you'll see what I'm referring to.

Use this one, it's from my '87 SL, the climate control systems are identical to yours.

Or, go to a local library and get free access to AllData, when you enter your car's make, MY, etc., you can pull up detailed system pages and repair steps. If you're going to attempt this work yourself, this info will be invaluable.

Say bob, thanks for the help. I pulled up drawings but couldn't really tell much about what i was looking at. I will try the library as soon as i get a chance. Got too many irons in the fire at this time but will let you know what i find. It may be a while so thanks a bunch. P.s. A guy on the old fordbarn forum told me not to type in all capitals because it made it sound like i was yellin' at you, but i'm not, just easier for me. Thanks again. Kelly
