Somebody please help, I've got some serious confusion going on here.

I'm looking to buy this sweet looking 560SL, but... even though the VIN on the title matches it is being sold as a 1981 560SL (did they make the 560 in 81?) and the model on the title says 38S (WHAT!?).

your car is 380SLC which is made in 1981.

 

Exactly where my confusion lies. This car is definitely a 560SL. As far as I know there is no mistaking the differences between the two cars.

I would guess at this point that I am looking at a chop shop special.

 

Could it be a Euro 500SL?

Motor is V-8 and VERY powerful.

Headlights appear to be European (or so I have been told). Driver side is left (American).

Only thing about car that does not seem normal to the 560SL is a wing on the back and extra lights under front bumper (both of which are probably after-market?).

Vehicle started out red but has been repainted.

Wheels appear to be factory wire rims (center knock-out has M-B logo).

OK, here's a link to a car that looks very similar, even in color. It has the same extra lights in the front, the same MB logo, etc... This link is to a 1986 560SL.

Now I say similar but what I really mean is nearly identical. The 560 in question has a tail and what appear to be factory wire rims. It also used to be red so the interior is tan.

I tell you what; I will take some pictures and post them here as soon as I can. I really LOVE this car and want to buy it but want also to be sure that I will not have titling and/or insurance problems down the road.

you were right, it is the sports (2 door) version of 560SEL.
