Default Wont shift into 4th when engine is warm

Hi there,

Bought a S420 94 a couple of months ago, a really well kept car! The car was running great until a couple of weeks ago. The tranny started to shift between 2nd and 3rd gear irregularly. Went to the mechanic and he changed some vacuum lines into the tranny and now there is a new problem, the tranny will only go into 4th gear when the operating temp is around 80 degress but not above, this means I have to drive on the highway at 65 with 4000 rpm in 3rd gear!! Does anyone have an idea of what the problem could be??

Default irregular shift

Kasper,
I have a 1995 S500 and today mine also had a simaliar issue, except my car would not shift out of second talking about red-lining. I kept moving the shift lever back to second then to third and it finally shifted. It did it several times and finally it seemed to go back to normal. I am not sure of the problem, I am currently waiting on some DVD service manuals that I ordered on ebay, so I hope they will provide some clues where to look at. If you find out anything drop me an email and I will do the same for you. Thanks, vrock99 at yahoo dot com.

Hi Rolltide,

Glad to hear that im not the only one experiencing this problem. I took it to the shop, and the mechanic told me that it might be a problem in the body valve in the transmission, which would set me back at least $1500. Please send me a mail when you figure out what the problem is with your car, we might have the same issue.

Default AT Kickdown Cable

I am not a transmission expert by any means. So, this is only a suggestion of what you may want to check. I had a similar problem with my '95 S420. My mechanic worked on the vacuum lines and changed the modulator. But, it still did not solve the problem. The check engine light kept coming on and when analyzed by the computer it gave out Code 26 - Upshift Delay. The problem turned out to be the AT Kickdown Cable (also known as a Boden Cable). Once this was replaced, the problem stopped. Good luck solving your problem.
