Sounds like a loose connection on the switch

w140 or w220?

Get the car On Board Diagnostics scanned using MB Star Quick Check diagnostics.(at an MB dealer). Small charge that will save you a lot of money potentially. The body CAN needs to be accessed and this cannot be done by many garages.

Likely the Electronic Ignition Switch EIS is the problem but these parts are expensive and you do not want to change parts unless confirmed by the scan.

Check the connection at the starter motor solenoid.Sometime the connections
need to be cleaned.

I suspect a problem on the CAN. Water / corrosion / or some other faulty unit eg. lighting switch. etc etc.

This will show up on a MB Star Diagnostics check rather than a straightforward OBDII scan.

When it was checked previously were there any other codes present or just the starter relay code? Did the new starter relay (temporarily) overcome the problem or not?

Need a better description of the history of this problem to help any further,

Mileage? w220?

when it was on MB star diagnostics it just showed the green relay which is the starter relay, and had it replaced you were correct in sayin it was temporarily fixed, this morning the car still wouldnt start, i opened the fuse cover and started to push the relays in just in case they were not sitting in, i tried to start the car and it started, i noticed that there was a black relay next to starter relay i touched it while the car was on, and the engine turned off, i got a new relay at the cost of £30 and replaced it in the fuse box, and everything seems to be fine now, i`ve used the car several times today and seems to be fine.

Looks like you have located the problem. However it may not be the second relay you have changed BUT the wires to the starter relay below the plastic surface into which they plug.

Suggest you run the car till you get a reoccurrence and if not then all is OK. If you do get a reoccurrence of the problem investigate the wiring below the plastic deck to ensure the connectors have not corroded.

Default S280 doesn't start

Hi there
I have an S280 1996, it doesn't start anymore.
it cranks just fails to fire as no spark in the coils. I have tried alot of places, installed all new spark plugs, new battery, alot of fuel, got mercedes Coutts to give diagnostics-no luck still.
it just stopped working after a fuel leak which was fixed respectively but it fails to start and for diagnostics the ignition module, cam and crank angle sensors were also checked and tried donor parts. there were 2 alarms -1 factory alarm and a second mongoose alarm, some after market wiring by previous owner, the TV and sound system works but the car doesn't start . My car has not been working since march 2010, any suggestions?
Looking forward to any reply
