I don't know about the S-class models in particular, but 1995 was the last year for OBDI vehicles. 1996 was the first year OBDII was mandatory for all vehicles.

in 140 model Sclass, the 36 pin socket can be called OBDII too?

i only know that the 220 model got this rectangular 16 pin which i assume as the OBDII. exactly the same as BMW, and lately on other brand of cars too.

126 model uses 16 pin socket also but it is round. california version got another type.

am confused.

[8D] all i know was to plug e'm in and read the faults.

OBDII uses a 16-pin socket. OBDII is supposed to be a standard so there shouldn't be any 36-pin sockets. But, I'm not an wizard on this subject.

okay

so i think USA versions started using it earlier than the rest of the world version.

during the late 90's, i can see this connector hidden somewhere behind the ashtray, and other concealed area.

we are told that they uses it for checking the emission and standard on every US version vehicle because the donut guys carry the same diagnostic computer all the time.

That's my understanding as well. The [translation] software is specific to a vehicle but the hardware connection is standard.

This is kinda weird in itself, since the data is also standard. However, I think I read somewhere that there is a standard dataset but the manufacturers can collect unique data in addition. If true, that would explain the proprietary software.

Does anyone know where the plug-in for the diagnostic reader is on the 126 chassis, namely the 420? I haven't gotten the Service CD in the mail yet, so I can only guess.

i can only remember that there was a round connector somewhere on the engine compartment.

the 126 control unit got no memory on faults and therefore cannot be diagnosed to recall those parameters.

what i do before is to hook up directly a BOSCH MOT tester or BEAR computer on every cavities it got. battery, cylinder #1, ground, ignition coil terminals, exhaust pipe, ampere gauge, etc. by then i can clearly see everything that's happening inside the engine via oscilloscope...even the compression and analysis of every cylinder. it was really fun.
seeing those wires and cables between the car and computer reminds me of chinese noodles.

chow mein.

Wow, that Bosch MOT tester sounds like a really interesting tool. I have had a few Jeeps with OBDI computers, where you could read codes, so I assumed it was the same for Mercedes. Where can I get one of these MOT testers?
