Default After Market A/C Evap Replacement

I have a 92 300SD 250K the evaporator leaks, yes, it's been through the vac. tests and the leak is too big to plug with sealant. We're thinking of putting in a aftermarket shelf air in the trunk. Like they do for hot rods. Any experience out there with this?. I don't want to put the $$ in replacement evaporator as we're already on 2nd engine replacement for this diesel and worried about future expense like transmission or something else costly. I love the car but can't reason to put significant dollars in it, but at same time need AC for Florida summer.

Another example, you can't drive your house, but you can live in your car.....

I dont know who sugggested this idea, but there is a fuel tank under the rear package shelf, and how are you going to make the plumbing work? 3-4 K for the AC, the evaporator is cheap the labor to replace is the killer, you have to remember the dash comes out. The car is probably not worth much more, live with it or dump it.
