Default 94 S500 air compressor

I have chance to purchase 94 S500 for $10k. It's in A+ cond except needs a/c compressor. I am getting estimates all over the place. Please help. Is it fairly easyl to repl or better off with mechanic? 1st Mercedes, is that a good price? Thanks jafcjf

The compressor is usually pretty good, the evaporatorator is the weak link on these cars. To change the compressor is much easier than the evaporator, where the dash has to come out. I would get a second opinion, from someone who knows these cars MB is the choice. The evaporator replacement can go for $3500 or more, 20 Hrs labor, sometimes the dealer helps on parts, most of the time not. They can leak test it, and draw failure codes, add this to the price. There are other things that fail on these cars, closing assist pumps, and audio amps! You did not mention mileage and maintenance records.

I CAN NOT RECALL COMPRESSOR FAILURES ON ANY FORUMS, BUT LOTS OF EVAPORATOR ISSUES, ALMOST TO THE POINT OF CLASS ACTION!
